Ever since the creation of AI, we have been—and currently are—under constant stress of having our jobs replaced. In this ongoing debate of AI vs. Human Creative Writing, we live in a world where people are going to ask if it’s really me writing or if it’s an AI. It’s hard to know what is real anymore. The contest becomes a fascinating exploration of AI vs Human Creative Writing.

So, let’s decide to do field research and find out for ourselves how reliable AI actually is. At least, in terms of writing a short film script. The concept of AI vs Human Creative Writing intrigues many as it unfolds.

The 24-Hour Script Challenge: Can a Human Write Better Than AI?

In my first Do It In A Day Challenge I have given myself 24 hours to write a 3 page script to see if I can beat AI in a compelling story that makes sense and has characters that don’t feel one-dimensional.

These are the rules I laid down with Gemini:

And I made sure to do it this way so I don’t accidentally follow similar beats to whatever Mr. Gemini will be doing. Also, it’s more fun if I am just as surprised as all of you when I finish mine and get to read what AI has written. That way I can compare them and see who wins in AI vs Human Creative Writing.

Well, there’s only one thing left to do. Get to writing.

Case Study Results: My 3-Page Human Script ‘Begins With You’

For the title, it was originally going to be called ‘Glimmer of Hope,’ but then I realized: people are definitely going to think I’m an AI. So, I went with ‘Begins With You.’ It might be a little generic, but it doesn’t sound like AI gibberish. Plus, I have a plan to tie the title into the script as a life lesson for Stephanie, my main character. Can AI plan ahead like that? I think not!

Realizing very quickly that it’s been a long while since I wrote a script. I’m not sure if Final Draft has changed its format or if I just messed something up, but the formatting seems a bit off to me. I’m not sure if I’m losing my mind or not—but we power on!

The script has been completed, which i will link here. It’s not the full 3 pages, but I’m still counting it since it was on the 3rd page! Overall, I felt it harder to write a short story of 3 pages compared to a larger script.

Writing this was emotional. These characters felt real, and I wanted their journey to live beyond the page. Instead of a cheap cliffhanger, I aimed for a balance of closure and interpretation. It was a challenge, but that’s exactly where human creativity beats the machine—in the space between what is said and what is felt.

Now we get to the AI’s version. I’m copy-pasting this into a Google Doc that will eventually become a PDF, so the formatting might look a bit rough compared to my polished Final Draft version. But we won’t fault the AI for that; we’ll be fair and stick strictly to the script itself.

First thing I noticed is that the AI uses much more action and scene description. I focused more on dialogue because I wanted those three pages to be emotionally driven by words, rather than filling the space with descriptions of the coffee table. To each their own, but I feel that descriptive style fits better in a longer script—or one where the setting is vital to the narrative. Unless Elara was literally watching Maya delete and highlight text on her screen, all that detail feels like a waste of pages.

Opening line felt really unnatural to me. ‘The first sentence is always a liar’—who actually talks like that? At least my opening used a bit of humor, playing on the classic meme of writers starting every story with ‘It was a dark and stormy night!’

Most of this dialogue feels random and out of place—like the sudden claim that endings don’t exist in real life, or the random blurt about her mother being gone for six months. It could have been a good transition to explain why she was writing the book about her mom, but instead, it just feels disconnected.

However, it’s immediately followed up by: ‘Maybe you’re trying to write a bridge when you should be writing a ghost.’ She doesn’t even elaborate on what she means by that—as if Maya is just supposed to be like, ‘Oh! You mean my mom is Casper!’

Thus concludes our field research on how AI writing differs from human creative writing. Not to say my script is perfect—trust me, I’m always my own biggest critic.
