Nearly 200 people recently weighed in on a seasonal poll I created to settle the debate: which time of year is actually the best? The results were a shocker—Fall absolutely dominated the rankings. It seems the majority of people are more interested in crisp air and changing leaves than the heat of July.
The results were as follows:
Fall 55.2%
Summer 13.1%
Spring 19.1%
Winter 12.6%
One of the people commented on Tumblr telling me why their favorite season was fall and mentioned the fashion of fall. This was very interesting to me because I haven’t considered fashion for why people might hate a certain season of the year.
What shocked me was how nobody liked Summer. It’s personally my favorite time of year because I love the heat.
However, I wanted to further deep dive into why people might prefer a certain season. We are going to do that here today. Also, does my poll match up to the rest of the world? How do my stats resemble the rest of the world? Let’s find out.
Understanding the “Winter Blues”: A Case Study on Seasonal Discomfort
I’ll be honest here—I don’t even need to Google facts or statistics for this one. I can just share my own story on why winter is my least favorite time of year.
First off, the darkness hitting around 4 PM is a total mood killer. Obviously, this depends on where you live, but based on my poll, it’s safe to say this is a major reason why most people dislike winter. When you get home from work and haven’t even eaten yet, it already feels like it’s time for bed. Nobody wants to go outside and hang out with friends around town when it’s pitch black out.
Then there’s the cold. Even if you want to go out and do fun things… you just can’t. At least not for long. Even if you’re trying to be resilient and act like the cold doesn’t bother you, frostbite is a real thing. It’s dangerous. It’s even worse when you live in a city like mine where the public transport is absolutely useless. Being forced to stand outside in a blizzard for 45 minutes because of a late bus makes the whole winter experience so much worse.
What about all the extra chores we have to do? Shoveling in Winter sucks. At least in Summer if you have to mow the lawn it doesn’t take all your strength. Not even just that, but you have to spend 10 extra minutes just prepping yourself to go out into the weather. In summer you can just leave the house. Even if you apply sunscreen it takes about 30 seconds.
Why Is Fall the Most Popular Season? The Science Behind the Sentiment
To keep your “casual talk” and “field research” style consistent with your blog’s tone, I’ve polished the grammar and punctuation. I also adjusted the flow slightly to make your transition from “pumpkin spice” to “psychological ASMR” feel more like a professional observation.
The Seasonal Shift: A Case Study in Autumnal Appeal
I’m already realizing that the results of my poll are similar to how most people feel globally: Fall is at the top, and winter is at the bottom.
For me, it’s all about that pumpkin spice latte! Mmm.
Beyond the caffeine, Fall represents change and new beginnings. It gives us the feeling that anything is possible—whether that’s making new friends, seeing new places, or just jumping into a pile of leaves.
Fashion also seems to be a major factor in why people love the season. Turtlenecks, flannels, and leather jackets provide a specific kind of comfort. To me, fashion is more than just looking cool; it’s about the comfort it provides and the message it sends about a person’s personality. You can truly tell a lot about someone just by the clothes they wear.
We also can’t forget the crunching of leaves under your feet. This is something you might not even consciously think about, but that crisp sound is like ASMR for our ears. It triggers a sense of pleasure and happiness, almost making us feel like kids again
Final Analysis: Infrastructure, Resilience, and the Survival of the Seasons
The season of Fall provides a sense of comfort and safety. It’s less stressful because we don’t spend more energy then we want having to just step outside.
Imagine having to work all day only to come home and realize you have to shovel for an hour, taking up even more of your free time and strength. Or having to do it on your rare day off from work. Not everyone can afford a snow plow.
Personally, Summer will always be my favorite. There are so many things I can do in the summer time without feeling too cold after an hour of being outdoor. I can run and exercise and feel like I’m working up a sweat. It’s enjoyable to walk and see Groundhogs in the grass or stop and look at the flowers and trees.
This is why it’s so important for me to have people interacting on social media with me. Field research at home is way easier when I have people to bounce off of. It’s easier to conduct research through polls and observe why people feel a certain way about a topic.
